Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

What is HBOT?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the use of oxygen in a pressurised environment. A pressurised hyperbaric chamber enables individuals to breath oxygen enriched air (and is also referred to as a recovery chamber) and provides up to ten fold increase in oxygen levels in the blood plasma and haemoglobin. This treatment is particularly beneficial for athletes as it supports enhanced performance, faster recover from injury, concussion relief, career longevity and improved long-term health and well being.

Benefits of HBOT for athletes

Increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve and saturate more effectively into the cerebral spinal fluid of the brain and spinal cord, as well as the plasma in the blood system, which yields a broad range of positive physiological, biochemical and cellular effects.

To achieve and maintain peak performance, athletes need to ensure their bodies can quickly recover after intensive training and events/games. Athletes ask a lot from their bodies. They train hard, putting their bodies through intense effort every single day. They only have a short amount of time to recover between sessions, not to mention when performing or competing, when the workload is even harder.

To sustain this high level of work, athletes must make the most of their rest and recovery times and this is where HBOT can be a huge benefit:

  • HBOT supports tissue repair and function by increasing the available cellular energy
  • The red blood cells become more malleable, increasing their ability to penetrate restricted blood vessels so that cells and tissue receive the oxygen they need to regenerate and heal.

HBOT can facilitate a speeder return to pre-injury activity levels, as well as improving both short-term and long-term prognosis of injury.

Inflammation and pain play primary roles in the recovery process and HBOT has been shown to significantly reduce inflammation and ease pain.
